Our Businesses – Our Events – Our People
Escape the hustle and bustle of Auckland Central to one of the big city’s best kept little secrets – the glorious vintage township of Waiuku
Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula
Waiuku is a country town in the Auckland Region in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located at the southern end of the Waiuku River, which is an estuarial arm of the Manukau Harbour. It is 40 kilometres southwest of Auckland city centre, and 12 kilometres north of the mouth of the Waikato River.
Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula provide a treasure trove of experiences just a short drive from Auckland city. Follow the walkways of the early Maori people and European pioneers. Discover the wharves and settlements where steamers and sailing vessels delivered their cargoes and loaded for their return voyage. Visit New Zealand’s oldest continuously licensed hotel and enjoy a variety of fine food at any of the cafes and restaurants.
A drive west to the surf beach at Karioitahi is a must, with it’s black iron sand, rugged cliffs and breathtaking views.
The Manukau Heads lighthouse
Overlooking the Tasman sea and entrance to Manukau harbour is a popular tourist destination. On the way you will find a new generation of artists and craftspeople and enjoy the beauty of harbour and coastal beaches.
Adventure seekers will find walking and cycling tracks, experience kayaking, horse riding, sailing, para gliding, fishing, surfing, blo-karting and 4WD tours.
